Used in medieval time to carry knights to battle, this native of the province of Friesland in the northern part of the Netherlands is one of the oldest domesticated breeds in Europe. As the need for warhorses mandated larger animals, the Friesian morphed into harness horses for agricultural work. When gas powered machines started to take the place of animals, the breed began to rapidly dwindle in number. In fact, by WW I it was reported that there were only three Friesian stallions available for breeding purposes. Through concentrated efforts, however, the breed is again thriving. Appealing because of their appearance and the fact that they are a willing, active and energetic horse that is also gentle and docile, the Friesian tends to carry itself with elegance.
